International Women’s Day 2009

Well, where are the women of our country at in 2009?

We have elections coming up soon. What do your party’s list look like with regards to representation of women? Check out the two new elections websites.

I haven’t studied it carefully, but it looks to me that none of the leading political parties is doing to great on that front.

And if we get a leadership, insensitive to the needs of women, it can only be our fault for letting it happen.

But today we celebrate International Women’s Day with our sistas across the world. We look at progress, we salute courage an bravery.

We say Halala Women of the World Halala!

And we commit ourselves to another year of moving forward to ensure equality, unity and working towards a more caring society.

Looking for Student Web Writers

Mikhaqil and Musa at the Newscafe.

Mikhail and Musa at the Newscafe.

We met at Newscafe in Durban last night, that is Musa Gumede, and me (Karen) with Mikhail Peppas, Senior Lecturer in the Dept of Media, Language, Communication, and Translation at the Durban University of Technology (DUT).

We discussed with him whether he had access to students who would be interested to write for Africansway website. We believe it has really eclectic topics and they will gain practical experience because they will benefit from being tutored in practical web writing by me – which I also do for a living.

So watch this space, hopefully we can soon get the students blogging, because it seems to me as if the website team is a bit slack in this department. (Maybe this will make the blogposts pour in!!!)

Change – Streetnames and Mindsets

The First post on a blog is always the easiest – or is it the hardest? At least there is nothing to change, it is a new beginning. Because I’m so amazed at how afraid people are of change.

Change is one of the topics I think we’ll come back to time and time again, because, hey, the only thing we can be sure of, besides death and taxes, as the old saying goes, is change.

Well, we want to use this blog to get conversations going about music, dance, art, business… and street names. Yes, believe it or not, here in Durban, South Africa where most of us who are directly involved with this blog and Africansway website live, people are still all over the place about street name changes.

One would think they were being asked to change their spouses!

Maybe that wouldn’t have elicited so much response and outcry!
